FROM THE WALL OF WEIRD DEPARTMENT: PROSTITUTES GET THEIR OWN RADIO STATION

You're going to think I'm making this up, but I'm not. According to a Reuters story, a group of prostitutes in Salvador, Brazil have gotten permission from the Brazilian government to begin operating their own radio station. The group, the Association of Prostitutes of Bahia (APROSBA), intend to use the airwaves to address issues regarding their trade of choice.

Believe it or not, APROSBA is considered a faith-based organization, and is supposed to be educating fellow prostitutes about the dangers of HIV. I assume that none of their courses teach abstinence, otherwise there goes the rent payment for the month. I guess what APROSBA boils down to is a labor union for ladies of the night.

Anyway, their project leader, Sandro Correia stated: "We are not going to apologize for prostitution but we are going to struggle for the dignity of the profession."

Pardon me while I go bust a gut laughing in the other room.

The station will be staffed by working girls and media professionals (there's a difference?) and will give the girls an alternate means of income.

Russell Mc from Dave Barry's blog suggests that the call letters be WHOR.
